Job Title: Youth Justice Mentor
Reports To: Youth Justice Innovations Coordinator
DEFINITION OF POSITION: The primary role of the YJI Mentor is to build relationships with, and mentor youth who have been referred to the Youth Justice Innovations program. The goal of this program is to help youth who have found themselves in the Youth Justice system understand what actions led them to their referral and help them learn new skills and strategies to avoid criminal behavior in the future. The mentor will use evidence based strategies, such as Carey Guides, as well as evidence informed strategies such as the Project Self Discovery model to achieve these goals. The mentor will help the student identify areas for growth, set positive goals and discover interests in positive, pro-social activities. The Mentor will also help coordinate, and supervise students with volunteer hours at local organizations. The YJI program will work hand-in-hand with the SPARK (Student Pathways to Adventure Resilience and Knowledge) after-school and summer program staff to help referred youth get involved in healthy pro-social activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job requires evening and weekend hours. Hours will vary between 15-30+ hours/week depending on caseload. Very competitive wages depending on skills, education and experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with referred youth to pomote positive behaviors and interactions with staff as well as other youth and community members.
- Collaborate with SPARK program and SPARK mentors to help youth connect with pro-social activities and opportunities
- Respond to the individual needs of youth and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families/caregivers.
- Create and maintain log for youth justice check-in to ensure compliance with court orders.
- Relay information related to compliance; progress; etc to assigned social worker regularly and as often as necessary.
- Provide necessary Carey Skills Guides/assignments/tasks to youth as identified by the assigned social worker and ensure completion.
- Utilize positive strategies to support the social and emotional development of all youth.
- Report on a regular basis to Youth Justice Innovations Coordinator regarding issues of need and/or concern.
- Lead activities at the site when scheduling allows.
- Demonstrate unwavering belief in the capacities of all students, and a passion for advocating for the most disadvantaged and marginalized
- Demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and different identity groups by being sensitive, appreciative, respectful, and responsive to beliefs, practices, and cultural needs that are different from your own.
- Understand the prevalence and impact of childhood trauma and respond to youth behaviors accordingly.
- Consider the full context of each youth’s living and family situation and provide support, referrals and community connections for that youth and their family when appropriate.
- Approach challenging behaviors with a restorative rather than punitive mindset.
- Help referred youth see their engagement with YJI as an opportunity rather than a punishment.
- Be willing to grow and learn in this role, which includes seeking out training and new skills to become more effective.
- Not take things personally.
- Have a track record of punctuality, reliability, meeting deadlines, and execution
- Must be able to work independently without direct daily oversight and complete tasks timely and thoroughly.
